Dental Work Endurance, Cats, and Cake

I had 2 wisdom teeth pulled this morning due to an abscess that developed a couple of weeks ago in the lower tooth. The top one had to go, too, just for balance, or some semblance thereof. I had lovely nitrous oxide while their broadcast played the Moonlight Sonata, which was perfect, but all that did not manage to dull the pain of the roof of the mouth novocaine shot when it came--I involuntarily eeped high, followed by a growl, but fell back into the nitrous oxide calm in a few minutes. The dental surgeon was nice and quick and I was surprised when he told me both teeth were out. Now I'm on antibiotics. It's been 4 hours and the novocaine isn't completely worn off, but I suspect I won't need the percoset they gave me. I am slightly head achy.

I am in particular solidarity with Tuxie because the poor baby had 2 teeth pulled on Monday and a dental cleaning, and he was given a shot of bupronephrine (narcotic) for pain and covenia (antibiotic), and I gave him onsinor anti-inflammatory pills for 3 days and he was in bad shape for those 3 days. I don't want him in pain, but I suspect he was over medicated and that may have been as bad as dealing with pain for him. He was restless, and probably didn't get a wink of sleep for at least a day, constipated and not eating well, and alternately head-butty affectionate and terrified hiding from me--I suspect fearing I would take him to the vet again. It was very sad-making. Since I don't seem to need the narcotic, I'm wondering if he would have been better off without it. I don't know if he would have had that reaction anyway to the drugs he was put out with for the procedure. He is thankfully all back to normal now. We're in it together, little boy!

I am now sitting comfortably on the sofa with Tuxie curled against my left side, and Moo with her head on my lap on the right side. For my reward I get this wonderful company, I will do nothing this afternoon but read my book--I'm in the middle of the second book in Mary Doria Russell's The Sparrow duology: it's excellent--and, alternately nap when ready. It's sunny through the trees out my pretty window, but the world outside will have to carry on without me. As soon as I finish typing this, I get to have cake. I deserve cake for surviving those needles. If I feel up to it this evening, I will finish the eclipse post.

Awwww, Tuxie's little hot pink paw beans! And Moo's little fuzzy head! (-:

I stayed home yesterday and watched season 7 of Game of Thrones straight through. Oh my heart that was glorious. And for some reason I thought it was the last season so I was surprised by the ending coz it seemed like a cliffhanger to a subsequent season rather than a finale.

But oh my heart watching those full grown dragons was glorious. And now one of them's got special powers.

Ugh. Sick here--am thinking I got it from the guy in the cube next to me, seems like a cold though my throat is fine so far. Drove home with the window down, the cold fresh air helped a bit for preventing puking in the car lol. Ugh ugh ugh. Have been sleeping off and on all evening, with time out for chicken soup a couple times.

As [personal profile] mirabile always says, it is *always* correct to punch a Nazi.

Apparently this is how we roll in Seattle.

Uh oh, I discovered a big patch of poison ivy behind the front bushes. I hate to attack plants, but I bought a spray-bottle of weed killer and sprayed every leaf I could see. (Some of it is winding its way up the inside of a fat bush which may, sadly, become a casualty of the spraying.) Shiremom, Shiredad, and I are VERY allergic to poison ivy. We'll see how things look out there over the next week.

Shiremom and I both really enjoyed "August Rush". Thank you to everyone who recommended it!

In happy-happy news, I sat myself down yesterday, refused to be distracted, and wrote chapter 4 of my fluffy Cormallen story. Hooray! Now it just needs some polishing.

Pippin's been extra alert today, listening to the high winds whip the trees around, but it finally seems to be nap time. zzzzzzzzzzzz

I'm always a little puzzled when students apologize to me when they return after being absent. They haven't hurt me in any way!

I wonder if this is a personality thing -- I'm focused solely on the content, and maybe they feel that somehow not being present has harmed our relationship. Or they fear that I will hold absences against them. I don't! Their grade may suffer, but that doesn't affect me; it affects them.

Anyway, it happens every semester and every semester I am puzzled.

It's a birthday!

I will reply to previous comments, eventually. I'm sorry, I can't even blame it on RL this time, a fandom has consumed me ... or I should say re-consumed me.

For those wondering (and thank you all for that) my mother opted to drive to Chicago to ride out Hurricane Irma. She's fine, and judging by the Facebook posts, so are my in-laws.

My husband will be home in just over 70 days. I'm sitting here looking at the words I've just typed, at that number, and I still can't believe it. So soon, so close.

Work is better than I even thought it could be. I never really acknowledged just how much of the depressing atmosphere could be ascribed to the teacher I worked with before, a woman so burnt out and frustrated that she had to abandon ship for her own sanity. The new teacher I work with, whom I'll call "Ricki," is like a breath of fresh air. I don't feel like a constant fuckup on a daily basis, everything I do to help is met with genuine appreciation, and several people have told me they can see that I'm happier. The politics and drama between all of my other coworkers haven't changed, the parents seem more sensitive and defensive, and the children are even more badly behaved and physically violent, and yet somehow this year is already worlds better than the previous one, just because I'm facing it with Ricki. Ricki, for her part, came from a school administration so much worse than this one (her old principal actually cursed her out for still crying at work when her mother had recently died) that none of our administration's irritating little ways are getting her down.

In the few moments when I'm not at work or caring for my son, I'm reading Harry Potter. I was reading the books to my son, a chapter a night, and not letting him watch the movie until we finished the book. I finally let him off the hook after Goblet of Fire because he was desperate to just watch them, GoF was pretty thick, and the books don't get any thinner from there. But I wanted to keep going, I was so immersed in Rowling's words again, the rich world-building, well-rounded and engrossing characters, and delicious mounting tension with each novel. The most amazing part is the million little details that I've forgotten since I last read, so in a lot of ways it's like reading the books for the first time again. I'm nearly done with Deathly Hallows now, and I literally don't know what's going to happen next. Even the big stuff that I do remember, well, I can't remember exactly how things got to that point, so even the twists that I know are coming feel new.

When I'm not reading canon HP, I'm sitting in front of my computer reading HP slash, because that's just the kind of fangirl I am, dammit. :) Turns out I'm into what's known as The Golden Trio, meaning Harry, Hermione, and Ron involved in a loving group relationship, or just a scorching hot three-way. I guess some people are squeamish about even writing about youngsters getting it on, even willing teenagers paired with other willing teenagers, because just about everything I read is set after all three come of age. It's fine with me, though I'm a bit weary of Mr. and Mrs. Granger-Weasley inviting poor, divorced Harry to be their piece on the side.

And if a lack of variety in Harry Potter slash is the worst thing I have to complain about, then I have to say my life is pretty damned good right now, thank you. :)

Still in fifth position overall, 59 60 minutes out of first. Can I catch him up? Doubt it! Might try though that's probably not "skillful" behavior. Still human apparently lol.

Happy Friday. Man am I glad to get there. Going to make my reservations for the Sandpiper today. Sadly my friend can't join me but we'll try another time. So now I have to decide what room to get balanced with having to pay for the whole thing myself (translation -- probably won't put myself on the top floor like we usually do :-)

How can I tell autumn is arriving? Harry starts demanding lap time.

Happy birthday, [personal profile] lindahoyland! I hope your boys are treating you with the delicate care you so richly deserve. Or at least refraining from knocking over cups and bowls and glasses and anything else that catches their eye. Well, Reuben's eye :-)
